Castel del Monte is a charming medieval village in Abruzzo, in the province of L’Aquila. Its territory is included in the mountain community Campo Imperatore – Piana di Navelli and is part of the famous National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.
Located at 1345 meters above sea level, Castel del Monte has behind it the Gran Sasso, the highest peak of the Apennines at 3,000 meters and the Altopiano di Campo Imperatore, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. In front of this majestic meadow stand the mountains of Sirente and Majella.
Castel del Monte falls within the District of the Barony Lands, which includes some of the most evocative villages in Italy, such as Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio.
And just like the nearby village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castel del Monte also has its place within the prestigious list of the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy.
It is no coincidence therefore, that this small medieval village has attracted the attention of some international filmmakers, who have found it the ideal setting for their films.
They were filmed right between the narrow alleys of Castel delMonte, which in fiction took the name of “Aguillon“, some scenes from the movie Ladyhawke, with Michelle Pfeiffer and RutgerHauer, which also has the setting of the Castle of Rocca Calascio.
Castel del Monte was the main setting for the film The American, with George Clooney, Bruce Altman and Violante Placido. That secret atmosphere that spreads through the narrow streets of the village and its many tunnels dug into the rock, as well as the nocturnal silence in which the village rests, were the main characteristics that attracted the interest and the selection by the director Anton Corbijn .
In July 2017 the village of Castel del Monte was the backdrop to the new Ferrari commercial and saw the participation of the legendary “Friends” actor Matt LeBlanc
